After the success of the previous day, I almost didn't feel the need to go to the various different sanctuaries. Seeing things in the wild is far more satisfying than seeing them in captivity, but hey, it was already paid for and MOAR ORANGUTANS!!! I was not disappointed.
The trip was just 5 of us, a lovely Spanish couple from Majorca and their two kids, and they were going to Turtle Island the next day as well. First stop was the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. They take young/baby Orangutans found orphaned and raise them with the minimum of human contact.
In the wild, Orangutan babies stay with their mother until they are 5-7 years old, almost as long as humans! In the Centre, the 1-2 year olds are kept in a nursery, but after that, they are free to go into the forest, but can also stay at the centre (e.g. they are not locked up). They have a minimum of human contact, and lots of other Ourangutans to play with and learn from.
We had 2 stops at the Centre, first was feeding time at the nursery. The feeding is done outside which is accessible to the forest, and it's not only Ourangutans that turn up!
More feeding, this time aimed at the more grown up Orangutans, again, lots of monkeys.
Next we drove to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, where they do the same sort of thing. More cuteness and some 'Monkey-spreading'
Next was the sun bear sanctuary. These are the smallest bears. They climb trees and dig in the earth and are fairly cute looking too.
Lastly a short trip to the Rain forest center, but it was late and the kids were tired so we didn't spend too long there.
