Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon was an add-on to the tour. It's a 'slot canyon', very narrow but tall.  Made of water eroded sandstone, it's about 5-10 feet wide, 40 feet tall, and very twisty and windy. Where the light comes down from above and shines down into the darkness below its interesting and beautiful. Unfortunately we were there fairly early in the morning and the sun wasn't very high, so I get the feeling we missed out on a lot of the light show.  There were a couple of particularly stunning bits, like 'the dragon's eye'.

Flash floods are a very real danger here, though the guide assured us they get 2 hours notification from further up the canyon.  On some occasions there is enough water to entirely fill the slot canyon all the way up

Smokin' thumb!

The number of visitors to Antelope Canyon means the various companies that use jeeps to get there have to be quite organised or it would be chaos.  In the background is the Navajo run coal power station that supplies electricity to the reservation. It's now proving to be unprofitable and it is a bit of an eyesore, so it's being shut down and removed in a few years.
